About Us
Learning Is For Tomorrow (LIFT) is a community-based nonprofit adult literacy organization located in east Baltimore City, Maryland. LIFT has been providing literacy services to Baltimore City residents since 1988 and is the oldest adult literacy organization in the city. We have operated in East and South East Baltimore for over 36 years. We are the oldest community-based nonprofit in Baltimore City. LIFT became its own 501(c)3 community-based nonprofit organization in 2007.
What We Do?
LIFT provides adult literacy instruction, computer/technology training and life- skills instruction to adults who have not received a high school diploma or who have limited literacy abilities. LIFT focuses on serving adults who are at the lowest income levels and at the lowest literacy ability levels. The majority of LIFT students face many barriers to learning. Over 70% of our learners report as having some type of disability. These challenges include suspected/diagnosed learning disabilities, physical challenges, learners who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and those who are Blind/Low-Vision.
Who Do We Work With?
LIFT has a strong cooperative relationship with the other literacy providers in Baltimore City, various state agencies such as the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), mental health programs, substance abuse recovery programs, the National Federation of the Blind, the Hearing and Speech Agency and Blind Industries and Services of Maryland. Organizations routinely refer learners that are at the lowest learning levels or who have special learning challenges to LIFT. Through a combination of specialized instruction and adaptive technology, LIFT has a proven track record of success in providing specialized adult literacy services in Maryland. LIFT is the only adult literacy program in Baltimore and Maryland that offers literacy services to the Blind-Low Vision and Deaf-Hard of Hearing communities.
